January 28 is Data Privacy (Protection) Day, an internationally recognized day to raise awareness of the importance of privacy and protection of personal data. Epokingine would like to emphasize its commitment to respecting user rights to privacy and erasure by keeping personal data private and securely stored. As this is the first Data Privacy Day Epokingine is acknowledging we would like to take this time to raise awareness on how this day is recognized by other organizations and how individuals can try to ensure that their personal data is kept safe.
European Data Protection Authorities acknowledge Data Privacy Day by running social and traditional media campaigns educating people on the importance of privacy rights and practices while going over privacy concerns with new and emerging technologies. In Canada the Office of the Privacy Commissioner uses the week of and around January 28 to raise awareness of the importance of data privacy and emerging concerns over personal data processing through public events and discussions.
During a time when private businesses and organizations are data scraping and processing on enormous scales, it is reasonable to be concerned that your data may unknowingly be included in this scrapping and processing. Here are some important steps that can be taken to ensure that your data is kept private.
Prevent unnecessary sharing with untrusted entities. Before using a website, service, or product, consider if the information you are sharing is necessary for your usage of the site, service, or product. Requests or collection of unnecessary personal information may be shared with other organizations or used internally for purposes you may not be aware of.
Read the Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Policy before using a new website, service, or product. All reputable organizations will have a link to a Privacy Policy on their website. A Privacy Policy is a legally binding document that should explain what data is collected, why it is collected, how it is stored, and how you may request erasure of your data or clarification on the collection of your data. If you are concerned about how an organization has handled your data it would be best to review their Privacy Policy.
Look for open-source or more transparent alternatives to tools and services you already use. Individuals and organizations that have open-source tools or applications are much less likely to collect your data because external entities are able to verify how well data is handled.
Your online rights are just as important as your offline rights which is why Epokingine is dedicated to respecting privacy and erasure rights.
